Redmi Watch 4 Full Review: The Affordable Smartwatch with a Metal Frame

During Redmi's 10th-anniversary event, alongside the much-anticipated K70 series, Redmi introduced a range of new products. Among these, the Redmi Watch 4 stands out, marking the first time the budget series adorns a "metal armor" design.

Excited about its launch, we promptly acquired one to determine if it stands as the best affordable smartwatch this year.

Design & Metal Frame

Introducing the Redmi Watch 4, its metal shield design enhances the premium feel, though I couldn't shake off the resemblance to an Apple Watch. Despite this, it stands as the most Apple-Watch-like model of 2023.

Contrasting with its predecessor, the Redmi Watch 3, notorious for its plastic frame, the Watch 4 learns from past mistakes, featuring an aluminum frame. While maintaining a lightweight profile, the metal-built exterior adds 10g compared to the Watch 3, weighing around 32g without straps – akin to a typical smart band.

The matte-finished metal surface resists fingerprints, and the stainless steel crown with a subtle texture complements the frame's fine processing. However, the sharp edges on the front face raise concerns about potential scuffs and scratches. Wearers should exercise caution to avoid accidental bumps, especially if worn tightly.

Noteworthy is the compatibility of the Redmi Watch 4 with Xiaomi's quick-release straps, facilitating easy removal and replacement. This compatibility extends to straps from other Xiaomi wearables, broadening the options for users.

Flat Front & 1.97" AMOLED Display

The front design maintains a square dial reminiscent of Apple's, with a 1.97-inch AMOLED display boasting a 74.8% screen-to-body ratio. 

This upgrade enhances information display and overall operating experience. The display quality, with adjustable brightness up to 600nit for outdoor use, coupled with variable refresh rates, contributes to a power-efficient device.

Software – HyperOS

A significant update lies in the Redmi Watch 4's software – it houses the latest Xiaomi HyperOS, making it the second Xiaomi wearable line to feature this operating system. The dial market offers an extensive selection of personalized displays, ensuring users find a style that suits them best.

The user interface remains neat and clear, resembling its predecessors. Swiping on the dial page grants access to notifications and preset widgets through the Mi Fitness app. However, the absence of a shortcut button for actions like starting sports might be a drawback for some users.

Health Tracking & Sport Tracking

Health tracking features remain commendable, with an upgraded heart rate monitoring sensor and 24/7 auto-tracking for blood oxygen levels. Additional features include sleep tracking, stress tracking, female cycle reminders, and breathing training.

For sports enthusiasts, the Redmi Watch 4 supports over 150 sports modes, offering a comprehensive range. However, caution is advised when engaging in certain sports, such as basketball and football, due to the device's sharp edges.

Other Features

Equipped with an independent GNSS chip, the Redmi Watch 4 supports five satellite positioning systems, enabling outdoor running track recording without a phone. Its 5ATM waterproof rating allows wear during water sports like swimming.

NFC functionality is included, offering an added convenience for users in China through secure offline mobile payments and full transportation card simulation.

Battery Life

Claiming a 50% to 80% improvement in battery life, the Redmi Watch 4 boasts up to 10 days in typical AOD mode and 20 days in typical mode with default factory settings. 

While we couldn't verify these claims immediately, the impressive 11% battery drop during a whole day of use with auto-tracking and AOD on bodes well for its battery performance.

Verdict

In the second half of 2023, the Redmi Watch 4 stands out as my most-anticipated smartwatch. It remains a top contender for the best affordable smartwatch, though its full utilization of Xiaomi's multi-device connectivity is yet to be realized. Currently, it provides a switch for smart home auto scenarios, showcasing its potential for seamless integration.
